About the Washing Station
Established in 1982, Kamwangi is one of three active washing stations run by the New Ngariama Cooperative in Kirinyaga, on the fertile slopes of Mt. Kenya. Around 1,500 smallholder farmers contribute to the station, most managing only 1–5 hectares where coffee grows alongside bananas, tea, maize, beans, and Napier grass.
Fresh water from the Nyamindi River is used for washing, followed by sun-drying on raised beds. Careful hand-sorting, density grading, and extended fermentation all contribute to the clarity and depth of flavour that Kamwangi is known for.
Why AA Matters
In Kenya, the AA grade refers to bean size—screen size 18 and above. Grown at high elevations with cooler temperatures, these beans mature slowly, developing dense sugars, complexity, and a vibrant flavour profile.
Our Roast
We roasted this lot slow and gentle, allowing the natural sweetness and complexity to fully develop. This approach highlights the elegant structure of the coffee without overwhelming its delicate fruit and floral notes.
Flavour Profile
Kamwangi AA reveals a layered and expressive cup:
Flavour Notes: Green apple, honey, vanilla, and subtle tamarind
Body: Tea-like, light yet structured
Finish: Clean, refreshing, and lingering
Community & Sustainability
Beyond quality, Kamwangi supports its farmer members through credit access, farm input loans, and training in sustainable agriculture. The cooperative has also invested in improved wastewater systems and tree-planting initiatives to safeguard the environment for future generations.
In the Cup
Bright and complex, with sweet fruit and a clean tea-like body, Kamwangi AA is a shining example of why coffees from Kirinyaga are celebrated worldwide.
